Welcome to winter! Perhaps we’ve not seen the weather of our friends in the south, but this chilly spell of winter usually means that the 6 Nations rugby championship is under way. SPACE has been well represented in the past with physios Stuart Barton & Stephen Mutch ensuring that the squad is well maintained off the pitch, along with regular masseuse to the team, Gillian Main. Surgeon Gordon Mackay often sees the players directly after matches home or away to assess significant injuries that may require surgery, and this season sees SPACE Director Gregor Townsend shifting from media pundit to backs coach to the Scottish team.

SPACE is still backing the Scotland team this year, but all of the medical staff listed above are still available throughout the championship at SPACE HQ on Dalry Road in central Edinburgh for consultations on members of the public as well as sports’ people. We don’t only deal in men’s rugby here at SPACE either. Mairi has been profiling a number of our national cricket team following her spell with them as physio last year, and Louise is assessing track and field athletes with an eye for Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. A number of our athlete patients are featured in the online magazine of the Winning Scotland Foundation including the women’s rugby captain Lynne Reid and also the Antarctic explorer Fiona Lindsay.
