Kinesio Tape
Soothe joints & aching muscles–get taped
What it involves
Having strips of a special sports tape
applied to your aching bits –
you keep the tape on for up to
a week to let it get to work.
Celebrity fans include Lance Armstrong, David Beckham,
Germaine Mason and Simon Munn.
Time off work?
None – the tape is non-invasive.
You can even wear it swimming or in the shower.
Over the table
“K Tape, which is approximately the same thickness as skin,
is applied in a muscle stretch position. The skin underlying the
tape wrinkles when not in the stretched position, and this lifts
the skin from subcutaneous tissue, allowing interstitial fluid to
move to the lymphatic channels and promoting lymphatic drainage.
This causes a reduction in the local pressure on the pain receptors.”
The experts:
Stephen Mutch, sports physiotherapist and clinical director,
Louise Wright, physiotherapist at Space Clinics

On the table
“Magic tape? I may have been sceptical at first, but the single strip
of tape I had applied to my sore neck and shoulder appeared to
ease my aches and pains. Removing it was a struggle
(imagine the world’s largest plaster) but the muscles in that area
do feel more relaxed than usual.”
The tester: MH’s Laura Murphy
Risks
Allergies to the tape can result in a nasty rash –
avoid if you usually have a reaction to plasters.
When it’s advised
When you’ve had a consultation with a qualified
therapist about your muscular or joint pain.
When it isn’t
When you have sensitive skin that reacts to plasters,
or you haven’t had a consultation yet to rule out more
serious causes of muscular pain.
