Space Clinics
September 2008
It has been a busy year for Space Clinics and one full of good news for the team - an update on what we have been up to is long overdue, but we'd just like you let you know what has been happening behind the scenes.
Talking 'bout the new generation
This has been a joyous year for two of our SPACE families.
We have just welcomed our original Office Manager, Sharon Cleghorn, back to the SPACE fold following the birth of Lily in December. She's a beautiful baby, and already the joy of husband Ross and Sharon's lives. We missed Sharon greatly while she's been enjoying the first few months of motherhood, and are indebted to Jess and her team for taking over duties during the maternity period.
Not to be outdone, Barty (Stuart Barton) followed in the parental footsteps - you may have noticed his larger than normal grin and his inflated chest. There's possibly no prouder father in the world, and in Pittenweem certainly! Space Director and physio Stuart and his wife Jo had a baby son, Archie, in May. Good on you Barty and Jo!
We'd like to welcome Lily and Archie into the Space family, and wish them all the very best.
The right formula for Finlay
We were sorry to say goodbye to physio Olli Finlay in July but then, when you hear where he's decided to pursue his career, you have to agree we had to let him go gracefully...and for some of us, jealously.
Olli was offered a position with the Vodaphone McLaren Mercedes Formula One team based in Switzerland, and is now working with one of the world's best motor racing teams. Who wouldn't want to work with the current leading driver in this year's championship Lewis Hamilton, and sixth placed Heikki Kovalainen (at time of posting), and spend off-seasons away from the track snowboarding with the stars?!
Olli has a wealth of experience in many different sports, having spent time working with the FA, Tottenham Hotspur, GB Bobsleigh, Heart of Midlothian, Edinburgh Rugby..the list goes on, and no-one deserves it more. We're sure his skills will be appreciated in the world of motorsport and we'll keep in touch with his progress. In fact, we're hoping he'll send us some news for the website soon....unless our invitation to join him in the pit-lane comes before that, then we'll spill all first!
Well done, Olli-and don't forget our pit-lane passes!!
Tour de Force
Our Orthopaedic Consultant and surgeon, Gordon Mackay, embarked on an ambitious bid to cycle several legs of the Tour de France over the course of a week earlier this autumn. With his only injury being some mild chafing, he has scores of memories of the days he conquered the tour...Apparently top tips from our professional cyclist who's currently battling his way back to fitness, James MacCallum, encouraged him to tackle the mountains head on and enjoy the lunar landscape that appears at the top of the vertically challenging and infamous Mt Ventoux section.
And finally...
After several years of part-time studying and travelling to London, Stephen Mutch he has been awarded a Master of Science in Sport Physiotherapy from the Human Health and Performance School at University College
London.
His achievement is no mean feat given the course is considered to be one of the most challenging in
the country, and during his years of commuting and toil, he also held a full-time position with Edinburgh's pro rugby team, toured with the Scotland rugby and Scotland 7s teams, covered two Commonwealth Games and co-founded Space Clinics.
So Mutchy, a huge congratulations from everyone at SPACE. Now the fun can begin!
PS When are you starting the PhD?!
